Oakland has received 10.8 inches of snow and 3.33 inches of rain in the month of February. Also, the average high temperature was 43.9 and the average low temperature was 15.2.
Face-coverings will be optional effective 3/1/2022 for all Garrett County Public Schools. As a result of this action, GCPS is reviewing other components of the GCPS Reopening and Recovery Plan that are directly impacted by the face-covering decision and the most recent CDC guidelines.

At a special session, which was held in a virtual format and live-streamed for public view, Superintendent Barbara Baker recommended that Garrett County Schools adopt a resolution to make face-coverings (masks) optional for both students and staff pending the required approval of the AELR.

The Maryland State Board of Education voted Tuesday afternoon to make school face mask policies a local decision — but that’s not the final word. The board’s 12-2 vote paves the way for the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review to take the final vote. The committee approved the current masking regulation and will have to be the one to lift it.

The 2022 MPSSAA Indoor Track Championships will be hosted at the Baltimore Armory from February 16 – February 22. The MPSSAA plans to have the state finals live-streamed through the NFHS Network. The Garrett County Health Department continues to conduct free testing at their Oakland Office and at the Garrett County Fairgrounds. In addition, a partnership with the Ruth Enlow Library System has provided a supply of take-home tests and KN95 masks to the branches for distribution to the public.
The Garrett County Health Department’s Play Hard, Live Clean (PHLC) healthy lifestyle campaign is designed to encourage youth to make good choices by recognizing and rewarding them for certain positive lifestyle accomplishments from kindergarten through graduation. I’m planning on this: celebrate Valentine’s Day by cross-country skiing on a candlelit trail. My friend just shared that they will be grooming the trail and that should make for a good evening skiing!

Deep Creek Lake is known for its wide variety of cold-water species, and hard water anglers are catching a mix of yellow perch, walleye, chain pickerel, northern pike, rainbow trout, and largemouth bass.
According to a study, n Maryland, 9.5% of residents rely on cellular data to access the internet, while 8.4% of residents have no internet access at all. Out of all U.S. states, Maryland has the 12th lowest percentage of households that rely on cell data to access the internet.

One of 32 schools in the country selected to win $1500 worth of new physical education equipment, Northern Middle School was selected as a winner of the NFL’s Get Moving Grant. The students and teachers are hoping to win an additional $1500 grant as part of the NFL and American Heart Association’s Play 60 campaign! The grand prize winners will be announced LIVE on Thursday, February 10 at 1 p.m.
Official results from the Friendsville Municipal Election: Spencer R. Schlosnagle will remain Mayor for another 2-year term. Michael E. Artice, Pamela S. Humberson & Edward B. Kelley will serve a 2-year term on Council. James Hook will fill the remaining Council seat with a one-year term, that will be up for re-election in 2023.
