The weather today will be sunny—highs in the upper 30s and a low of 28—northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Wind chill values are as low as 1 below in the morning. The chance of rain is 10%.

The Garrett County Commissioners have announced their next public meeting agenda. The meeting will be streamed live on April 4, 2022 at 4pm.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and leaders in the legislature have reached a $1.86 billion agreement for tax relief over five years for retirees, small businesses and low-income families.

After a judge declared Maryland’s congressional map unconstitutional, lawmakers spent the weekend redrawing the boundaries, working to submit a new version before the court-ordered March 30 deadline. Judge Lynne Battaglia called Maryland’s congressional map an example of “extreme partisan gerrymandering.”

Here in Garrett County, we can experience any season on any day! Some friends and I went biking yesterday and it was a near blizzard!

Over the weekend, I was seeing reports of 10-12″ from around the county. I measured over 9″ of snow.

The BlackStrap Rail Jam is back this Saturday, March 26. Registration is at 11:00 AM in the McHenry Lodge, and the competition starts at 1:00 PM at Central Park.

The Appalachian Program at Future Generations University is hosting maple syrup tubing sanitation workshops across the region.

This Saturday, drop by the New Germany SP Lake House for this hands-on program, where Ranger Noah will be displaying a collection of furs, feathers, and skulls. Play some board games with friends and family, or kick back and watch the Lake House bird feeders to see which native birds make an appearance. Gather ’round the fireplace and stay toasty-warm during this free showing of March of the Penguins. A documentary chronicles the harrowing journey that emperor penguins make amid violent South Pole snowstorms to mate. On Sunday, join Ranger Noah for a fireside chat about the history of maple syrup making, followed by a moderately difficult 1.5-mile hike highlighting some of the tools of the trade.

A consistent stretch of warmth that gripped the northeastern United States may have fooled many into thinking warmth is here to stay. However, AccuWeather forecasters say that changes in the weather pattern and the polar vortex will direct chilly air (and snow) into the region during the remainder of March and early April.

This past Wednesday, Superintendent Barbara Baker and the Garrett County Board of Education (GCBOE) held a Special Board Listening Session. Superintendent Baker and the GCBOE would like to remind all students, staff, parents, and community members that the purpose of this meeting was to gain additional insight from stakeholders on the feasibility of the proposed Grade-Band Alignment Plan as it pertains to the southern end schools.

In addition, Ms. Barbara Baker, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Mark Greene, Manager of Communications & Public Relations, presented the Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) Communication Plan “A Path Forward” at the monthly Board meeting Tuesday, March 8, 2022. The Garrett County Women’s Hall of Fame was established through the efforts of the Garrett County Commission for Women and inducted the first members back in 1995. Its purpose is to honor local women who have made substantial or outstanding contributions to the economic, political, and cultural life of Garrett County.

Up to three women will be inducted each year. Both historical and contemporary women are eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame (nomination packets are available until April 1) as these women represent the past, present, and future vision of Garrett County.

According to a survey of 3,145 college students, students from Maryland are less likely to stay sober this spring break – however, a significant 27% say they will be practicing sobriety.

The PHLC campaign is in its fifth year. Graduation for Garrett County Public Schools has been set for Saturday, June 4, 2022 in the Ag Heritage Hall at the Garrett County Fairgrounds.

Fifteen weeks before the primary election, a trial opens Tuesday in which Republicans challenge a Democratic map of Maryland’s congressional district boundary lines. Here’s why it matters to you: “Maryland’s last two congressional redistricting cycles have involved extreme partisan gerrymandering,” said a brief filed last week by attorneys for a group led by Del. Neil Parrott, a Washington County Republican running for the seat of Democratic Rep. David Trone in a district stretching from Montgomery County through Western Maryland. Republican Del. Kathy Szeliga is among the leaders of the second GOP group.

To help celebrate National Library Week 2022 and Garrett County’s 150th anniversary, the Ruth Enlow Library will be hosting a “Dinosaurs Rock” Museum Show at all five branches. Participants will see life-size and genuine specimens while enjoying an interactive, fun, and educational show. The event will also include a loose fossil dig with real take-home specimens.

To help COVID-19 patients with weakened immune systems, the American Red Cross has resumed testing all donations for COVID-19 antibodies for a limited time. Plasma from donations with high levels of COVID-19 antibodies may be used as convalescent plasma.
