A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO FIRST TEAM 1629! This Garrett County team has returned home from the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS with the 2022 Chairman’s Award. This is THE most prestigious award and it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. Plus, the team earns a spot in the FIRST Robotics Hall of Fame.
These kids work their tails off to engineer a robot each “build” season. There is always an autonomous segment where the robot is moving in a pre-programmed way without human control. Then, sometimes the goal is for the robot to shoot frisbees, sometimes it lifts bricks, sometimes it shoots basketballs, sometimes it has to climb itself up a ramp, sometimes it hangs from a bar…. sometimes the game is to do a combination of all of the above! If you want to learn more about FIRST and the programs locally, send me a message!
Here is a video clip of the award ceremony — note, Dean Kamen, the founder of FIRST Robotics and inventor of the Segway, in the photos.
Also, I have to share my dad has been involved with the robotics team for 18 years. I’m so proud of him! He’s the guy that builds each of the unique fields so the team can practice the game, the cases for their LEGO map, the giant gecko cutouts, and more! He’s pictured below second in from the left… love you!

The POA lobbied for the State Lakes Restoration Fund (SLRF) to be increased to $3 million per year and the sunset clause eliminated. The last two years both the house and senate bills failed and the SLRF was about to terminate leaving the Lake Management short on funds. However, a partial victory was achieved by our legislators this year by having the SLRF amended into the “Great American Outdoors Act” passed by the house and senate.” READ MORE HERE.
