Summer is here, making it a great time to fish in western Maryland. At Deep Creek Lake, bass are active near docks, while perch, crappie, and pickerel can be found along grass lines. Try deep trolling near the dam for trout. See the July 9 Fishing Report for more.

Expect intermittent single-lane closures on US 40 near Hagerstown this Friday, July 11, for bridge work over I-70. All lanes are set to reopen by July 31, weather permitting.

The Western Maryland Economic Future Investment Board has released its 2024 report on the Senator George C. Edwards Fund. This year, $5.8 million in grants were awarded to projects in Garrett County, with a projected $43.5 million economic impact and 122 new jobs. With summer underway, Maryland Department of Natural Resources scientists are urging the public to watch for freshwater algae mats, which can pose health risks to dogs and other animals.

The Board of Public Works has approved over $4.3 million for 20 projects through the DNR’s Greenspace Equity Program, supporting green space improvements in underserved communities across 14 counties. Two more projects totaling $567,382 are pending approval.

The Garrett County Democratic Central Committee held its Annual Roosevelt-Kennedy Dinner on June 17 at Brewery and the Beast, drawing over 120 attendees. This year’s “Real Heroes” theme honored local and national heroes, as noted by GCDCC member Lillia Rose.

The Maryland State Highway Administration has started a slope stabilization project on I-68 EB near Finzel, closing the right lane before MD 546. Work is expected to finish by late September, weather permitting.

Due to recent flooding, raw sewage has been reported in Braddock Run and Georges Creek in Allegany County, prompting a warning to avoid contact with those waters. Garrett County is not affected, as we are upstream from the impacted areas, but Allegany County does neighbor Garrett County.

The Comptroller’s office, in partnership with the University of Maryland Business School, released a report last week on how federal spending and job changes impact Maryland’s economy, including the effects of recent and potential Trump-era cuts.

The Maryland DNR’s new MD Outdoors system is now live, offering online access to hunting and fishing licenses, permits, boat and ORV renewals, and more.

Garrett County now has the lowest crime rate in Maryland, according to the latest NIBRS data—a result of strong law enforcement, community support, and prevention efforts.

At the 2025 Roosevelt-Kennedy Dinner on June 17, the Garrett County Democrats honored Garrett County Community Action and Garrett County Pride with their annual IMPACT and INSPIRATION Awards for outstanding service to the community.

It has been reported that 62 white-tailed deer tested positive for chronic wasting disease in 2024, with most cases from the existing management area. One case was found for the first time in Howard County.
