Deep Creek Lake Lions Club organized a Fall Clean-up at McHenry Community Park on October 21, 2023. Despite rainy and cold weather, a dedicated group cleaned the restrooms, pavilion, and garage. The park offers a disc golf course, hiking trails, a dog park, and ongoing projects like a pump track and an all-inclusive playground.

GCPS is thrilled to announce that all four secondary schools have earned Special Olympics Maryland’s Unified Champion School banner recognition, showcasing their dedication to inclusivity in Unified Sports and Activities, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole School Engagement.

Today is the first day of a three-day muzzleloader hunting season — remember some local shared-use trails go through land where hunting is allowed! WEAR ORANGE!

The Beall School Road Bridge opened on schedule and within budget at noon on October 13, 2023. Mr. Allen Fisher, a local resident and key project supporter, had the honor of being the first to cross it, as he generously provided unrestricted county access through his property.

Oakland resident Mark Geiger, featured in the Sept./Oct. TOPS News magazine, achieved weight loss success with TOPS-Take Off Pounds Sensibly. Joining in April 2022, he lost 72 pounds, with an impressive 59.6 pounds shed within the first year.

Deep Creek Lake Lions Club Welcomes Three New Members and took the opportunity during the recent warm October weather to unite and clean up their designated portion of Rt. 219.

The Drug Enforcement Administration's National Drug Take Back Initiative happens on October 28, 2023. Garrett County is also setting up temporary drop-off spots on October 24 at Kitzmiller School (5:30 PM - 7:00 PM) and on October 28 at Grantsville Dollar General (10:00 AM - 2:00 PM). This week, Byco Enterprises starts preparing the Arrowhead Cove dredging project at Deep Creek Lake. The public can expect to see some activity around the site.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has managed Canada geese at Deep Creek Lake for years through non-lethal nest management and a hunting program since 2015 at three sites: Deep Creek Lake State Park, Crows Point, and Turkey Neck. Now, they’re seeking feedback to expand the hunting program.

REMINDER: On Thursday, October 12, 2023, all Garrett County Public Schools will have an early dismissal of three (3) hours for staff development. Friday, October 13, 2023, all schools and administrative offices will be closed for the Autumn Glory Festival. Regular operations will resume on Monday, October 16, 2023.

While it’s disheartening to bid farewell, please take note that two longstanding establishments in town will be closing their doors. Deep Creek Fitness, your fitness companion for the past 11 years, will conclude its operations on October 31, 2023. Additionally, Four Storm Artists Gallery, which has enriched the community for 15 years, will also be closing its doors.
