HUD officials in Philadelphia announced expanded FHA policies for the 203(k) Rehabilitation Mortgage Insurance Program, aimed at helping homebuyers and homeowners renovate their homes.

DHCD’s Office of Statewide Broadband has launched the BEAD broadband challenge process, starting July 16, 2024, with a deadline of August 15, 2024. HUD recently previewed proposed rule changes to modernize the HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME), aiming to expand funding access, clarify rules, simplify requirements, enhance rental assistance, and promote green building. The Maryland Producer Cold Storage Grant Program assists farmers and watermen in purchasing essential cold storage equipment. Applications opened on June 14, 2024, with a deadline of August 30, 2024. MARBIDCO will match up to 50% of project costs, with a grant award range from $500 to $2,000, requiring a minimum project or equipment purchase size of $1,000.

From the edge of an outcrop, view green mountains stretching from Pennsylvania to West Virginia. Overlook Cumberland, a transportation hub, with roads and rail lines visible below. Wills Mountain State Park, long inaccessible, will soon open to the public thanks to a Maryland Department of Natural Resources acquisition.

Twenty-one years ago, Chesapeake Forest Lands became Maryland’s first certified forests. Today, 214,000 acres of state forest land are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, ensuring international standards for forest management.

Hunters can now enter the lottery for the annual six-day black bear hunt in Western Maryland. The entry fee is $15, and applications are available from the Maryland DNR through August 31.

Some property owners members have noticed lower lake levels this year. According to Chris Nichols, lake level seem to be declining faster than in previous years, especially in shallow coves, mainly in the southern part of the lake. The ENOUGH Act targets concentrated poverty in marginalized Maryland communities, addressing higher crime rates and limited educational and economic opportunities. Here’s the MD Fishing Report as of July 10: Largemouth bass are popular among freshwater anglers, feeding at night and resting in cool shade during hot summer days.

Starting July 1, 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor will raise the overtime pay threshold to $844 per week ($43,888 annually) and further increase it to $1,128 per week ($58,656 annually) by January 1, 2025. This update aims to better protect workers against inflation. In Maryland, 303,259 additional workers will now qualify for overtime pay.

The USDA announced $4.5 million to establish three new Nutrition Hubs nationwide. These hubs will promote food and nutrition security and help prevent diet-related chronic diseases, focusing on historically underserved communities.

Eric Packard of Calvert County earned a Master Angler Milestone Award from the Maryland DNR’s FishMaryland program for catching ten trophy-sized fish of different species. He is the eleventh Master Angler since the program’s 2019 inception.

At the POA meeting on June 22, 2024, a DNR executive asserted the legality of renting private docks on Deep Creek Lake, contrary to past practice and COMAR rules. The Policy and Review Board (PRB) disputes this claim and will address it at their quarterly meeting on July 29, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the Discovery Center. This discussion could potentially increase the number of boats on the lake significantly. The PRB, POA, and County are currently investigating this matter both legally and with the DNR. Please RSVP if you plan to attend the meeting in person; in case of a larger turnout, we may relocate to the college and will notify attendees via email.
