Federal infrastructure funding has surged since 2021, with over $550 billion allocated. However, a major worker shortage is straining the construction industry. The Maryland Board of Public Works approved the purchase of a 42-acre lodge property in Garrett County, surrounded by Savage River State Forest. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will use the property, which includes cabins and yurts, to expand overnight accommodations.

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has secured a $40.3 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to boost third-grade literacy proficiency. A Reminder of Students’ First Day of School and Bus Safety: Garrett County Public Schools will start the new school year on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, with a 3-hour early dismissal. All schools will be closed on Monday, September 2, for Labor Day.
