Our Town Theater in Oakland is holding their annual Ghost Walk beginning this evening at 7:00pm (sold out) but also Friday and Saturday evenings.

Grantsville Community Museum Annual Dinner & Fundraiser program will be held this weekend October 21. The program will be Archaeological Discoveries Found in the Design of the New Route 219 at Hilltop. The Allegany Arts Council is hosting professional watercolor artist Alexis Lavine at the Saville Gallery in Cumberland through October 29th.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources issued their latest Fall Foliage and Festival report yesterday. While Autumn Glory is over and some of our vistas may be a bit “past peak” there is still some good leaf peeping here and in the area.

If you write poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction and reside in the Garrett County area and/or are a member of Garrett County Arts Council, they are looking for you to submit your creative writing work.  Deadline for submission is Oct. 31, 2017. Walleye, large yellow perch and smallmouth bass fishing at Deep Creek Lake has improved due to cooler water temperatures.

You have likely heard of the newest attraction at the lake – Monkey Business Adventure Park.  Lisa Cole of Wildfulness tried it out and wrote this blog post on it.

Wednesday October 18

Ruth Enlow Library is hosting a “One Maryland, One Book” discussion this evening at the Oakland library from 6:00pm-7:30pm. The book is Purple Hibiscus.

The Mountain Fresh Farmers Market will be open this Wednesday and Saturday and does not close until October 28th. Some Winter dates are also planned. Wednesday’s market opens at 10:00am and goes until 1:00pm.

The Master Gardeners, under the direction of Ashley Bodkins, University of Maryland Extension, have been answering questions at the Market each month this year. You can also bring a sample of a problem to the Extension Office and let her help you there. Just call ahead to be sure she is on the premises before you visit: 301-334-6960.

Eat your veggies! We have great restaurants offering a variety of dishes here in Garrett County, including Vegan and Vegetarian fare. With 8 million Americans either Vegan or Vegetarian, we know some of our readers are as well. Travel site WalletHub just announced the results of their “Best Cities for Vegans Study” and New York, Portland and Orlando came in first through third, respectively. The study also has some related interesting facts.

Engage Mountain Maryland launched the You+2 Initiative yesterday in Garrett County. The intiative asks residents to pledge to vote in the 2018 midterm election and also challenge two more people to do the same. The goal of this is to achieve the greatest per capita voter turnout in the country.

Congratulations to George Kullgren from Westminster, Maryland. George supported the Garrett County Arts Council by purchasing chances on the raffle quilt and was the lucky winner, as drawn and announced at the Heritage Craft Fest.

Famous painter Thomas Kinkade’s brother, Patrick, visited Oakland over the weekend and had this to say:

As part of its strategic planning process, the Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County will hold community conversations over the next few months at all branches. The purpose of these conversations is to gather input from members of the community about the library’s role in their lives. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources yesterday reported that the 2017 young-of-year striped bass survey in the Chesapeake Bay shows the fish is reproducing in strong numbers. The annual survey’s index is 13.2, above the 64-year average of 11.7. Rockfish, as they are commonly known, are an important sport and commercial fishery and this is good news for the state and region.

Monday October 16

So the weather forecast was off a bit for the weekend … it turned out sunnier and warmer than we anticipated but we will take it! Today will be cooler with showers this morning and then partly cloudy this afternoon. Highs only reaching the upper 40s.

We hope everyone had a great Autumn Glory weekend! From the feedback received from friends and family, and our own experiences out and about, it looks like it was another successful event.

The Garrett County Fire & EMS Fallen Heros Memorial was dedicated on Sunday in McHenry, MD.

While the Governor was in Garrett County, Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford lead a trade and diplomatic mission to Europe that kicked-off Friday with stops in France, Belgium, and Estonia. In addition to trade-related topics, the Maryland delegation will also be learning about cybersecurity and drug and opioid abuse efforts in Europe.

The movie Iron Jawed Angels tells the true story of how brilliant young activists took the women’s suffrage movement by storm and helped American women gain the right to vote. The movie, sponsored by the newly formed Garrett College chapter of American Association of University Women, is free and open to the public.  It will be shown at 3:00pm and 6:00pm on October 18th in the Garrett College auditorium.

Sheriff Rob Corley has announced that the month of November will be designated as No Shave November for the employees at the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office to raise funds for the Garrett County “Police Providing Presents Christmas Project”.

October 22-28 is Maryland Economic Development Week. The MEDA Economic Fall Conference will be held on October 23 at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum, and will feature opportunities and benefits related to Maryland’s 12 military bases. While many innovations take place “on base,” every community can identify opportunities to acquire these advancements and turn them into commercial applications for local companies.

Looking for antiques and vintage items?  Come on down to the 44th Annual Civic Club Antique, Vintage & Collectible Sale at the Oakland Community Center (formerly the Armory) at 8th and High Street.  Mike will be there working (not as an antique) in the kitchen and out-front on Saturday afternoon. The 50th annual Autumn Glory Grand Feature Parade will be in Downtown Oakland starting at 1:00pm on Saturday.  Be sure to get there early as there will be street closures and lots of people and traffic.

Governor Hogan will be coming out to Western Maryland to ride in the Autumn Glory parade and visit several sites throughout Garrett and Allegany counties.

The Autumn Glory Festival Car Show Mountain Top Cruisers, the biggest car show in Garrett County, will be in Oakland from 9:00am-3:00pm on Sunday.

A Bear in a Bikini? That’s what the Friends of Deep Creek Lake have planned for their Autumn Glory Parade float. Actually, it is not uncommon to see a bear swimming in the lake this time of year. The next DCL Policy and Review Board meeting is scheduled for October 23, 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Discovery Center.

The first segment of Maryland’s muzzleloader deer season opens statewide October 19th. This is one of several deer hunting opportunities offered in the state and typically coincides with pleasant fall weather. The early muzzleloader season runs from Oct. 19-21 in Deer Management Regions A and B, which includes Garrett County.

The Ruth Enlow library will be participating in the third annual Maryland S.T.E.M. Festival with official events scheduled at the Friendsville, Grantsville, Kitzmiller, and Oakland locations in early November.

It will be a bit cooler today with temps hovering at about 60 degrees. Cloudy with a slight chance of rain but otherwise a great Autumn Glory evening .. we wait all year for this event … let’s make the most of it!

The Scottish Rite Masons are holding a free Childhood Speech and Language Disorders Clinic for children up to 21 years of age that are exhibiting speech or language issues. The Clinic will be held at the Paul B. Naylor Masonic Hall in Oakland today, October 12th, starting at 5:30pm.

In an effort to promote healthy watersheds, the Garrett County Department of Planning & Land Management has prepared a fact sheet outlining some best management practices regarding yard waste. Please take some time to review the information contained on the fact sheet on their site for ideas and tips on managing your yard waste.

The next GOBA meeting is next Tuesday, October 17 @ 8:30am at the Oakland B&O Museum. An interesting fish story: A new analysis by Oregon State University suggests that open-ocean aquaculture for three species of finfish is a viable option for industry expansion under most climate scenarios — an option that may provide a new source of protein for the world’s growing population.

Garrett Regional Medical Center will hold the next Look Good…Feel Better workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 5:30pm at the GRMC Lower Level. A little foggy this morning turning into partly sunny with a slight chance of showers this afternoon. Highs in the low 70s.

October has been designated as I Can Swim! month by the Garrett County Commissioners. I Can Swim! is a free water safety and swim instruction program in partnership with the Garrett College Community Aquatic Recreation Complex, the Garrett County Board of Education, the Garrett College Foundation and the County.

Smoke N Mirrors Gallery will be hosting a live model drawing session this evening at their downtown Oakland studio from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. This is a mature modeling session that requires preregistration and a $15 fee.

Did you know that more people – 145 million-  participate in outdoor recreation each year than attend an NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL games combined!  A recent report also indicates that people are spending much more on “experiences” and that crowdfunding has enabled more new products geared to the outdoor market than ever.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently welcomed 35 new young adult members into the Maryland Conservation Corps. The class will start will begin work immediately treating hemlock trees in Savage State Forest for the hemlock wooly adelgid, a destructive invasive insect.

Gobble Gobble.  Autumn Glory is almost upon us. In addition to many festivities, the first annual Turkey Trail is alive and well (except for the turkeys that is). The dinners are a tradition dating back decades.

Monday October 9

Showers today; highs in the low 70s. Chance of rain 100%.

Traffic fatality. In the early hours of Friday morning, a tractor trailer travelling eastbound on I-68 pulled over with mechanical trouble around the two-mile marker and the 28-year-old driver of a 2011 Kia ran into the rear of the trailer and was pronounced deceased on-site by troopers.

Show YOU the money!  There is an information session at Northern High School this evening at 6:00pm for parents wishing to learn more about financial aid opportunities for their children currently enrolled in high school. Financial aid experts from both Garrett College and FSU will be present.

Calling all parents and high school students! The Garrett County College Expo will be held on the Garrett College campus on Tuesday, October 10th, from 9:00am-12:00pm.  Over 50 colleges, universities, technical schools and branches of the military will be on hand.  There will also be special panel discussions on financial aid and opportunities after high school.

West Virginia citizens voted Saturday and approved the Roads to Prosperity Highway Program that will fund $1.6 billion in upgrades to state roads and bridges and hopefully aid in job creation.

On Saturday, the Property Owners Association of Deep Creek Lake stated their position on two important lake-related issues: 1.) the State Lakes Preservation and Restoration Fund (SLPRF) that was established in law this year by the state legislature; and 2.) planned dredging of portions of Deep Creek Lake.

Partly sunny with a 40% chance of showers; highs in the high-60s today. We are due some rain… and it’s likely we will get those showers both Saturday and Sunday and only reach 61-62 degrees this weekend.

Many local homeowner associations (HOAs) are holding their annual meeting this weekend, the last weekend before Autumn Glory. Check out your association to see when and where they are holding theirs.

The Garrett County Commissioners and other dignitaries spoke at a ribbon cutting ceremony in Oakland to honor Internet service provider NeuBeam on Thursday.  NeuBeam provides high quality internet access to the County’s non-served and underserved geographic areas.

The Board of County Commissioners will be hosting the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Consolidated Transportation Tour meeting today, October 6, at 11:00am in the Board of Garrett Commissioners Public Meeting room.

Garrett County Habitat for Humanity home dedication to be held today at 6 PM for Kelly Shahan and her family. Everyone is welcome to come out and meet Kelly and her family and celebrate with them! Light refreshments will be served by the Hospitality Committee. The address is 190 Frank Custer Drive, Oakland. It’s located in Hopeland Village off of the Broadford Road.

Thursday October 5

Weather today will be party cloudy, warm, with highs in the lower 70s.

But winter is coming! AccuWeather is forecasting a chilly winter is in store for the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, particularly when compared to last year. For most of both regions, this will translate to an above-normal snow season.

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce Kick-Off Dinner for the 50th Annual Autumn Glory Festival is next Wednesday, October 11, 2017. The registration deadline is this Friday, October 6th.

Governor Larry Hogan announced yesterday that the Board of Public Works unanimously adopted a Maryland Department of Natural Resources recommendation approving 17 Rural Legacy Program grants – totaling over $23 million. One of the grants, for $1.3 million, will go to the Bear Creek Legacy Area in GARRETT County.

Best of luck to a new business in downtown Oakland. The Downtown Bakery and Fresh Market opens this weekend at 221 Alder Street in Oakland. The hours are Wednesday through Saturday 8:30am to 2:00pm. Fresh pastries, pies, breads and cookies are available daily, plus other goodies too.

According to the Department of Natural resources, cooler water temperatures at Deep Creek Lake have smallmouth and largemouth bass more active and roaming in transition areas. Tubes, spinnerbaits, small crankbaits and jigs are good choices near deep grass, rocky bottom and the few remaining floating docks. Cooler temperatures throughout the state are creating fishing opportunities.

Juli McCoy has been named the new Executive Director of the County United Way – serving Garrett, Allegany, Mineral and Hampshire Counties.

Garrett College recently announced that Mr. Aaron Clark, Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Benefit Specialist, will be at Garrett College, on Wednesday, October 11, 9:30am – 1:30pm. Clark will also make future visits to GC the second Wednesday of every month. Additional support staff will also be visiting at various times each month to help Veterans. The Mountain Fresh Farmers Market is open this morning and every Wednesday and Saturday through October 28th in Oakland. They are open from 10:00am-1:00pm and also just announced they will be holding a Winter’s Market on select dates in the Mary Browning Senior Center.

The Maryland Environmental Trust is now accepting applications for funding through Keep Maryland Beautiful — comprising five grants. More than $200,000 available throughout the state, with applications being accepted until November 15th.

The Springs Folk Festival is a celebration of the arts, skills and labors of our forefathers. They will have food, crafts, experiences and music for all ages on October 6 and 7.  Admission is $5 for adults.

In an effort to make online resources available to students in Garrett County, the Ruth Enlow Library and Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) have partnered to provide a library card to all students enrolled in the county schools. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by the tragedy in Las Vegas. We know it can happen anywhere, but we just seem a little safer here in Garrett County…

In light of the events in Las Vegas, President Trump has cancelled his visit to nearby Morgantown.

The Accident Library will hold Children’s Story Time today from 11:00am-12:00pm. Children’s Story Time is open to children ages 2-5. Join them for stories, crafts, and activities.

The Garrett Community Concert Band invites new members to join their multi-generational band.. There are no auditions; just dust off your old instruments and come out to rehearsals for the Christmas concert beginning today (and following Tuesdays) from 7:00pm-9:00pm in the auditorium at Garrett College. The Christmas Concert is Dec. 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the college’s auditorium.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources just announced their grants to volunteer fire departments in the state. Both the Eastern Garrett County Fire and Rescue and the Kitzmiller departments received $3,000 grants.  Way to go!

Oysters in the lake?  No oysters in Deep Creek Lake but they are in the Chesapeake Bay. Oyster season started yesterday and runs through March 31st.

The Governor’s Office of Small, Minority & Women Business Affairs is holding a Technical Training Classroom on Friday, October 20, 2017 in Crownsville.  This two-part event is free, requires separate registrations and is relevant for small and minority business enterprises that wish to learn more about doing business with the state. The Mayor & Town Council of Oakland wish to notify Oakland Water Customers in the South Third St., Second St., and Oak Street areas that the water will be temporarily shut off throughout the day on Monday, October 2 due to ongoing water line upgrades. Questions may be directed to Oakland City Hall.
 
The first Monday of October every year is “Blue Shirt Day – World Day of Bullying Prevention” which signifies the importance of National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month each October. Both adults and kids can buy a shirt and also visit their website for tips and help on how to deal with bullying.

Teens are welcome to attend a “One Maryland” book discussion at the Ruth Enlow library in Oakland this evening from 6:00pm-7:30pm. The book being discussed is “Purple Hibiscus” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

This past Saturday, officers from the State Police Barracks in McHenry responded to a report of a burglary at two commercial enterprises in Oakland. Upon investigation, they identified a suspect, obtained evidence, received a confession and took the individual into custody. Good job and a big thank you from your citizens!

Prospective visitors to Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County, Maryland can now explore 15 of the area’s attractions using 360-degree photos and videos thanks to the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce.

Six participants collectively lost 101 pounds over the course of four months as part of the year-long Prevent Type-2 Diabetes Education Program at Garrett Regional Medical Center.
