Lots of demand for good truck drivers out there. Garrett College is accepting applications for the next series of courses geared toward training individuals to obtain a commercial driver’s license. Training for both Class A (in 30 days) and Class B (in six days) will be provided. Training for Class A, weekday will begin on October 8th and the weekend is slated to start on October 6th. Garrett College and Garrett County Public Schools are partnering to host the annual Garrett County College Expo. This daytime only event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9th from 9:00am – 11:30am in the Garrett College Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex (CARC) in McHenry.  This is a free event and open to the general public.  Home school and private students, as well as parents are invited and encouraged to attend. Did you know that October 15th – 24th is Community Development Week? This is a nice event statewide and the Community Development Network of Maryland will be in Garrett County on October 22nd celebrating our own Community Action Committee’s work.

Bear Creek Traders is holding their Summer Clearance with up to 50% off through the end of this month. Schoolhouse Earth is holding their End of Summer Sale as well with 20% – 60% off select items.

We are blessed here in Garrett County with a good road system and very limited traffic, but it is an issue nationally and elsewhere in the state, with implications for us here on the mountain. The Greater Baltimore Committee is hosting 2018 Transportation Summit: “Our Neglected Transportation Infrastructure” on October 13th in Baltimore. I thought I would share.

I bought a Jeep over the weekend at Auto Land Jeep Chrysler in Accident. I had Jackie as my salesperson. I think it was the most stress-free vehicle purchasing experience I have ever had. Nice, honest folks and very laid back. And, no they are not advertisers, just giving them a nice shout-out from a satisfied customer.

Just heard from Michelle Ross that GOBA is sponsoring a Garrett Reads Festival this Friday, from 9:30am – 2:00pm for about 500 local first and second graders celebrating literacy and books with the support and participation of local businesses. They will visit a number of fun learning stations throughout the day. Note that Liberty Street from first to second will be closed to traffic.

This sounds fun! The Springs Historical Society and the Meyersdale Public Library are joining forces to preserve early photos of the Southwest PA area and to archive them for future reference. A free photo workshop will be held Saturday Sept. 22nd in Springs, PA. A photo expert from the Carnegie Museum will share tips on preserving photos at 1:00 pm and there is a morning session, too.

Each year the Community Development Network of Maryland honors organizations engaging in extraordinary community development work. The deadline is October 5th, 2018 at close of business. Awardees will be honored at their Annual Meeting on October 24, 2018.

The Garrett County Board of Education at its September 11, 2018, meeting, discussed possible scenarios regarding school configuration options as part of the RISE Strategic Plan. The Board is seeking public input regarding the options.

Clean air means a clean lake! Unfortunately, on Friday, the EPA signed a final agency decision denying Maryland’s petition for relief asking out-of-state power plants to run their already installed pollution control equipment in order to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to ground-level ozone problems downwind in Maryland.

S.T.E.A.M. Kids is being held at the Oakland Branch of the Ruth Enlow Library this afternoon from 2:00pm – 3:30pm.

The Southern Garrett High School Volleyball team earned over $800 through a car wash this weekend– a special shoutout to First United Bank & Trust for hosting!

All Chamber members are invited to attend the next Marketing Roundtable on Wednesday, September 19th from 11:00am – 12:00pm in the Chamber conference room. They will be hosting Ruth Toomey, Executive Director of the Maryland Tourism Coalition (MTC). This event is free but there is limited seating and registration is required.

The Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club fifth annual “Bark in the Park” 5k race will take place on Saturday September 22nd at 8:00am to benefit their off-leash dog park. It’s an off-road (headphones OK), pet friendly race that will start and end from their park on Bumble Bee Road.

Speaking of the Lions Club, they need skiers, both adult and high school age, to serve as sighted guides, as well as a couple of snowboarders to take video and pictures, on Wisp this Winter for their Blind Skiers Program. Contact them to learn more about this great opportunity to serve.

A United Way Sponsors a report, ALICE, that details out Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed information. Of Maryland’s 2,192,996 households, about 10 percent earn below the federal poverty level of $11,880 for a single adult and $24,300 for a family of four. But far more, 28 percent, or 616,398 households, are defined by the United Way as living below the ALICE threshold.

The 10th annual Mountain Maryland Plein Air Exhibition and Competition begins on September 24th.  This even draws some really talented artists to the area, with some nice accompanying events.

The 45th annual Antiques, Maker and Collectible Show and Civic Club Café and Bake Sale is a “go” for Autumn Glory Weekend at the old Oakland Armory. Due to a SNAFU with the printed Autumn Glory program this event was left off. Hours for the event are Autumn Glory Friday and Saturday, 10:00am to 6:00pm and Sunday 10:00am to 3:00pm. Always a fun event and the food and baked goods are homemade.

There were approximately 400 people in attendance at the Baldwin Dedication Ceremony in Oakland this past Saturday in Oakland.

We are hoping Florence does not do too much damage, but it is a scary situation along the coast and we will likely be impacted by significant rain early in the week.

Friday is hands-on in the Science Room all day at the Discovery Center. They will also be holding scavenger hunts.

Don’t forget to check out Wings of a Dove at the Garrett 8 Cinemas this morning from 9:30am – 11:00am. Wings documents the efforts of the students, teachers and administrators of Crellin Elementary on their quest to create 15 steel drums in five days. Free and donations accepted at the door.

The Masons are playing at Black Bear Tavern Friday evening from 6:00pm – 10:00pm. Mateo Monk is playing at MoonShadow Friday evening as well from 8:00pm – 10:00pm.

Don’t forget the Dedication Ceremony for the Baldwin Steam Locomotive at the Oakland B&O Museum Saturday from 11:00am – 1:00pm. In addition to the ceremony there will be kids’ activities, live music and tours, plus hot dogs and chicken dinners.

Sad news to share: a friend’s little chihuahua terrior mix was struck and killed on last evening on Garrett Road. Here is your reminder to slow down, put the phone down and carefully watch the road… thanks, folks.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will stock thousands of brown, golden and rainbow trout in select creeks, lakes and rivers from mid-September through the end of October. These are good size fish from one to three pounds.

Garrett College in coordination with AARP Maryland is sponsoring a class, A Day with AARP Maryland, at the Grantsville Senior Center on Friday, September 21st, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The free session includes lunch and discussions on fraud prevention, home adaption to aging and tax reform. Contact the college’s CEWD office at 301.387.3069 for more information and to register.

The 10th annual Garrett Mentors Barn Dance is scheduled for September 22nd at the Barn at Sang Hill Farms. While online tickets are sold out there are still likely released sponsor tickets available and room. Always a very nice event.

All eyes are on Florence. The hurricane remains a dangerous category four storm as of this writing, with rain in some areas expected to exceed 30 inches.

This weekend’s Savageman triathlon races have been cancelled due to the impending weather — racers will receive their shirts via mail and a code for 50% off next year’s races.

In light of Governor Hogan’s declaration of a State of Emergency on Monday, Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr. has temporarily lifted insurance restrictions on when prescription medications can be refilled at pharmacies within the state. Please check your prescriptions and supplies and make sure you are prepared, as travel could get tough, even in the mountains.

Ruth Enlow Library is hosting their regular Friends of the Library session this evening at their Oakland branch from 5:30pm – 7:00pm.  They are looking for more friends of the library to contribute ideas and talents.

There’s a free showing of the critically acclaimed Netflix documentary Recovery Boys this Friday evening, September 14th in the Garrett College auditorium starting at 7:00pm. It’s unclear just which path the upcoming hurricane will take but some weather sites are warning of flooding after a record-breaking summer of rain. The Weather Channel recently shared this map:

The Oakland branch of the Ruth Enlow Library is hosting Lap Sit this morning from 10:30am – 11:00am. Lap Sit is a special program that incorporates singing, rhymes, stories, and other activities that will entertain and stimulate very young children’s language skills.

If your organization, church, restaurant or grocery store is serving turkey dinners during Autumn Glory, you can be listed on the annual Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area Turkey Trail map.

This is a great idea: The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is offering to lend a variety of wildlife education “trunks” for use by classroom teachers, home-school educators, naturalists, scout leaders and other instructors. They include all sorts of cool stuff and a guide.

The Garrett County Commissioners are holding their next public meeting at the Grantsville Town Hall on September 17th starting at 5:00pm.

Plans are already underway for the annual Police Providing Presents event this holiday season. The program is funded entirely by donations – would you please assist in making Christmas special for underprivileged Garrett County children? More information can be found here.

It’s coming up on homeowner’s association “season” at the lake, with many local subdivisions meeting to discuss small and big issues that impact their respective developments, homes and homeowners. I urge all readers to attend theirs and to be represented.

According to the Maryland Board of Realtors, there were 35 homes sold in Garrett County in August, with an average price of $352,494, and the month ended with 455 active listings.

WalletHub just announced their 2018 study of the Happiest States in America and Maryland came in a very respectable 7th. Well, that makes me happy. Check out the site to see their methodology and where other states rank. I bet Garrett County was the happiest county in the state! Just saying.

As I write these Daily Notes, Florence has once again strengthened to hurricane strength and could pose a problem for the east coast. Please keep an eye on this storm, especially if you are travelling.

Garrett County Public Schools are on a two-hour delay this morning due to the widespread flooding.

The grand opening of the college’s new STEM building drew quite a crowd Saturday, with both of our US senators as well as regional and local dignitaries and many from the community present. This building is a really nice addition to our county. Here’s a photo of the new digital, 3-D dissection table being demonstrated. The only one in the state!

There was also quite a crowd at the Art, Beer & Wine Festival Saturday. I saw lots of engaged, happy faces as I served as Guest Pourer for one of the wineries.

On Friday, State Troopers responded to Meyersdale Road for a destruction of property complaint and found a 2013 Ford F150 truck that was severely damaged while the owner went four wheeling. The police ask anyone with information to contact the Maryland State Police McHenry Barracks at 301.387.1101.

Garrett County Department of Planning is hosting an open house this evening at the College from 4:00pm – 7:00pm. The session, “Thriving Population” will cover issues such as housing, population and the county’s services.

Are you related to “the missing link”? If you want to be sure, you can attend the “Find Your Ancestors” class at the Ruth Enlow Library Oakland branch this evening from 5:30pm -7:30pm? It’s free and will cover research methods, strategies and a Q&A with genealogical research experts.

Nearby, on the GAP Trail near mile marker 58, a large boulder and debris have fallen on to the trail; the trail is still passable. Somerset County crews are aware of the debris and are preparing tactics for removing the boulders this week.

The story was prepared by Brian Boal, CPA of Boal & Associates and covers some interesting, important tax law changes that will impact 2018 tax filings. I know it’s only September but he says not to wait until 2019 to understand and account for the changes.

Did you know that Washington College in Chestertown was the first college in Maryland? Founded in 1782 under the patronage of George Washington, it was also the first college chartered in the new nation. That little “tid-bit” of information comes to us from Governor Hogan, who wishes all students a successful year.

On a more restrained note, please take a moment today and tomorrow to remember all of those that perished in the attacks on 9/11. Doesn’t seem like 17 years ago.  While time heals, we should never forget.

When I stepped out at lunch yesterday it was hot, when I left work it was much cooler. Welcome to Garrett County weather I guess. This weekend’s weather will be mostly rain and much cooler. I hear we may be getting the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon and could receive heavy rainfall and with the potential for localized flooding.

The Science Room at the Discovery Center is open all day Friday for hands-on learning and scavenger hunts.

The Homeschooler Series meets today at the Oakland branch of the Ruth Enlow Library from 2:00pm – 3:00pm. The topic is “The Key to the Universe” with presenter Chuck Trautwein, mentor of the FIRST Robotics League Team 1629.

I am always impressed by the talented folks we have living here in Garrett County.  One such person is Ellen Ann Callahan, author of Plowed Over.  My wife just finished reading it and said it was great. Plus, it’s set in Garrett County. Give it a try if you like good fiction.

Butterflies are free! Help the naturalists tag monarch butterflies at the Discovery Center on Sunday from 11:00am – Noon to track them as they migrate to Mexico.

Sherry at the Dove Center asked us to mention that the 11th annual Festival of Trees will be here November 23rd and 24th at the fairgrounds. More to follow at a later date but put it on your calendar as it is always a great event with a great fundraising beneficiary in the Dove Center.

The 51st Annual Autumn Glory festival is coming in October and the Chamber just announced the online copy of the guide to the whole event, which runs from October 10th through the 14th.

Note in the schedule that the Garrett County Arts Council is not holding the Heritage Craft Festival at Southern Middle School or Broadford Elementary this year. Rather, an art experience called SEYMOUR will be held in the Simon Pierce building.

What’s the most germ-filled spot in an airport you wonder? Well the results of a study conducted by CNN might surprise you. One more reason to drive to Deep Creek Lake instead of flying to say, Tahiti or New Jersey!

Well, my cats Cashflow and Lucy let me have it!  They told me that I forgot to tell our readers that September is Happy Cat Month. I promised I would include it in today’s Daily Notes so here it is. I have also included a photo of my two girls below to make amends for my omission.

Never give up hope Toto!  A pair of ruby slippers that Judy Garland wore in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz and that were stolen 13 years ago have been recovered by the FBI. I am hoping for a beautiful Fall at the lake and then a wonderful winter for all.

There’s a HeartSaver course at the Kitzmiller branch of the Ruth Enlow Library today from 3:00pm – 7:00pm.  The course covers First Aid, CPR, and AED and is free to the first seven people to register. Contact Diane at 301.334.8091 or email at diane@relib.net to register.

Even in our peaceful country location addiction happens. While low compared to our urban and suburban neighbors, there were 15 drug and alcohol related deaths in Garrett County during 2016 – 2018. The County Health Department has some good programs and people working to help addicts, families and the community.

Allegany and Garrett county public schools are the only two school systems in the state with a pre-Labor day start. Since 2016, Governor Hogan initiated a post-Labor Day start for the rest of the state and said he sees no reason to change since the move has been well received. Allegany and Garrett have applied for a waivers each year in anticipating challenging winter weather.

New Board Members have been announced to serve on the Deep Creek Lake Watershed Foundation.

On Monday, September 10th from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Oakland Library, learn strategies for researching family history and finding that missing branch on the family tree at the genealogy course.

From the new to the old: Here’s a recent photo of the Baldwin 1920 Steam Engine in place at the Oakland B&O Museum sent in by Terry Helbig from the museum. They have made great progress on restoration and don’t forget that there will be a ribbon cutting and dedication at 11:00am on September 18th.

The Maryland State Police reported yesterday that their sobriety checkpoint Sunday on Garrett Highway at the McHenry cove overlook in the early evening led to two arrests for DUI and one for possession of Marijuana. Thanks for keeping our roads safe.

Hide Bambi, hide! The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced that archery hunting for white-tailed and sika deer opens statewide September 7th, and continues through January 31st.

The Garrett Chamber has announced that Monkey Business will be hosting the September Business After Hours on Thursday, September 13th, from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.

The Garrett County Democratic Club is hosting an Old-Fashioned Community Picnic on the afternoon of Sunday, September 16th. The event will be held at Broadford Park from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. and will feature food and live music with The Terah Crawford Band. This event is free and open to the public. The State of Maryland’s Procurement Forecast for FY20-19 is now available on the Governor’s Office of Small, Minority & Women Business Affairs website. The database is populated with state and federally-funded solicitations and contracts, with some well under $100,000 and others much larger. Check it out.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. There will be a candlelight vigil at the Glades Town Park in Oakland. Don’t have much more than that on local efforts, but it is a global effort.

Savage Road is playing at the Little Yough Summer Music Festival this evening from 7:00am – 9:00pm. Savage Road is a high-energy country band based out of Western Maryland. Bring a chair or blanket for this free concert at the Pavilion in downtown Oakland.

Tell them you “saw” it here first!  There’s a Crosscut Saw Competition at New Germany State Park on Saturday at 1:00pm. Families can learn about old time log cutting and cabin building.

Take a trip back in time via 80s Night Saturday at MoonShadow at 9:00pm. You can dress-up, hear original 80s music and remixes and take in the vibe.

You can join a ranger on a two-mile Sunday Stroll at New Germany State Park from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.  Learn about plants and animals along the way.

Here’s something different for visitors (and locals too): There’s a East Coast Truck and Tractor Pulling event tomorrow and Gun, Bow and Cash Raffle at the Bittinger Volunteer Fire Department from the 3rd through the 7th.

Did you know that Garrett County is the first county in Maryland to have a Barn Quilt Trail? We now have 38 beautiful quilts in our county.  Check out the quilts and the wonderful scenery this weekend using the map available from the Barn Quilt Association of Garrett County.

On August 30, 2018, at Southern Middle School / Broad Ford Elementary School parking lot, during school dismissal, there was a minor incident between two school buses: Bus 52 and Bus 21. There were students on both buses, but there were no injuries to any students or staff.

The Garrett County Health Department Population Health, Innovation, and Informatics Unit, located in Garrett County, Maryland, recently received a national award and recognition as its innovative health planning collaborative pilot project, the Garrett County Planning Tool, located on MyGarrettCounty.com.
