Saturday will be partly sunny, with highs in the mid-70s. Southeast winds of around 5 to 10 mph. Sunday will be numerous showers, with highs in the upper 60s and a low of 57. The chance of rain is 70%.
Ahead of Hurricane Helene, the drought conditions map for Maryland has been updated.
Hurricane Helene made landfall along the Florida Panhandle last (Thursday) evening. After landfall, the official track has Helene moving N and then NW up through Georgia/Alabama and moving into the southern Appalachian region through early Friday. The forecasts then have the quickly dissipating system then banking westward into the Tennessee and central/lower Ohio River Valleys over the weekend.
A weak remnant low may then track eastward over the Mid Atlantic late Sunday into Monday. Rainfall chances from the remnants of Helene are minimal to light, at this point, with isolated instances of 1-2 inches in Western and Central MD midday to later Friday. Some lingering unsettled weather is expected into Monday.
As of September 26, fall foliage in Annapolis is slow to emerge due to summer droughts, with leaves turning yellow and brown. Western Maryland is at a quiet mid-point, with falling leaves providing habitat for wildlife. The Eastern Shore near Assateague Island shows minimal color change, with some dogwoods, sweetgums, and maples starting to shift. For fall activities, see this week’s Recreational Spotlight!
The final report for the Deep Creek Lake Arrowhead Cove Pilot Dredging Project is now available online. This $2.2 million initiative tackled sediment accumulation over 23.5 acres to balance environmental needs with recreation and local priorities, setting a model for the future preservation of Maryland’s largest freshwater lake.
The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area, a program of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, is excited to announce the 2024 Autumn Glory Fall Foliage Tours. The Maryland DNR is adjusting trout stocking for 2024-2025 due to angler feedback and summer hatchery challenges from heat and drought. Surveys showed many anglers prefer catching fewer but larger trout. In response, we will be implementing a number of changes to the trout stocking program.

Two Chances to Audition! Auditions for Murder by the Book, a play by Laura Teasdale, will be held on Sunday, September 22, and Monday, September 23, from 7-9 PM at Our Town Theatre. The cast requires 8 actors—3 men and 5 women—with flexible options for age, gender, and ethnicity. This staged reading fundraiser will benefit both Our Town Theatre and Ruth Enlow Library, allowing actors to have their scripts onstage with minimal blocking. Additionally, auditions for Ghost Walk and short monologues will take place on September 29 from 2-5 PM and September 30 from 7-9 PM in the basement of the theatre, welcoming performers of all ages. Some monologues will be based on true events from Garrett County and can be tailored to fit the individual. Performances will occur at various locations in downtown Oakland, with the production scheduled for October 25 and 26 at Ruth Enlow Library.

Bethel Center’s Dedication Ceremony, celebrating the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church first dedicated in 1900, will take place today. Originally serving an African American congregation, the church was relocated to Pleasant Valley in the 1930s and used as a wheelwright shop until 2022. Mountain Lake Park was saved and moved to a scenic lot in the Historic District, overlooking Maryland Highway.
