Although we successfully pivoted the 2020 “If I Were Mayor, I would…” Essay contest, we are pleased to announce that the 2021 contest is back and will be implemented in full. We’re excited to continue one of the League’s long-standing traditions, educating Maryland’s fourth graders on how municipal government works and the role of the Mayor. This year’s theme is: Teamwork through Flexibility, Respect, Leadership and Civility.

- Coordinate a virtual visit to classrooms to highlight municipal government and the role of the Mayor
The Engagement and Outreach committee was able to identify a digital method of collecting essays, which will include regional Dropbox folders. Teachers will only be able to access these folders once they have submitted an entry form.
Information on the essay contest new guidelines will be mailed to teachers in January. Essay submission deadline is March 31, 2021

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center recently had two electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations installed by Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The stations are among the first such units the company has installed in its Maryland service area.
Fast-charging stations, also known as direct-current fast chargers (DCFC), can provide an 80% charge for most vehicles in less than an hour, enabling drivers to recharge during the day or on a break. Each of the fast-charging stations at the Garrett County Visitors Center can accommodate one vehicle per station. Charging time is limited to a maximum of 4 hours.
The Garrett County Chamber and Visitors Center also had one Level 2 charging station, which can accommodate one vehicle for charging and deliver 8 to 24 miles of range per hour of charging, installed by Potomac Edison as well. The maximum amount of charging time for the Level 2 charging station is also four hours.
The new stations are part of Potomac Edison’s EV Driven pilot program, a five-year Maryland Public Service Commission-approved program designed to benefit the state’s environment by reducing auto emissions and support Maryland’s goal to reach 300,000 zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025.
Over the last two months, Potomac Edison has also installed new dual port Level 2 stations at Garrett College in McHenry and at Oakland Municipal Parking Lot, located at 108 East Oak St.
Electric vehicles offer a clean, efficient alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles, averaging as low as one-third the cost-per-mile of gasoline. Depending on the battery capacity, EV driving range can vary from about 80 miles up to 280 miles or more. The installation of public charging stations through the EV Driven program will help reduce “range anxiety” for EV owners, as well as provide key data to help determine future implementation efforts throughout Maryland and other areas served by FirstEnergy’s utilities.

During the 53rd annual Autumn Glory Festival from Wednesday, October 7 – Sunday, October 11, the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce will have complimentary commemorative Autumn Glory Festival items available to the public, while supplies last, at the Garrett County Visitors Center in McHenry.
The Chamber will distribute a photo magnet and postcard featuring the official 53rd annual Autumn Glory Photo sponsored by M&T Bank along with a 53rd annual Autumn Glory Festival commemorative pin. The public is invited to pick up these complementary items at the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, located at 15 Visitors Center Drive McHenry, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., during the 53rd annual Autumn Glory Festival from October 7 – 11, 2020.
These complimentary Autumn Glory items will also be available at the Chamber’s Autumn Glory Craft & Gift Sale at the Ag Heritage Hall at the Garrett County Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 10 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, October 11 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Items are available at each location on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last.

As part of the 53rd Annual Autumn Glory Festival, the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area is once again celebrating the event’s roots by promoting area turkey dinners through the Turkey Trail.
The Turkey Trail features a local map along with a listing of local turkey dinners served in our region. Information includes food items served, pricing, location and hours of operation. The map and turkey dinner listings may be found online by October 2 at garrettheritage.com/turkey-trail—local-dinners or at the Garrett County Visitors Center. To be included in the listing, restaurants and organizations are requested to submit a form by September 30. The form can be found online at garrettheritage.com/turkey-trail—local-dinners.
“We are excited to promote the Turkey Trail tool for our visitors and residents to easily locate the local turkey dinners that are part of Autumn Glory and celebrate our heritage with a tasty tradition. People can attend multiple turkey dinners over the course of the five-day celebration,” said Kim Folk, Heritage Area & Groups Director for the Garrett County Chamber.
More than a decade before the Autumn Glory Festival became an annual event a group of local turkey growers organized and promoted community turkey dinners to promote their livelihood. The idea of a large festival was later developed to attract visitors to the area which led to the creation of the Autumn Glory Festival. Today, the festival welcomes approximately 80,000 attendees during the festival weekend. Activities include parades, band competitions, craft shows and so much more.
“The turkey dinners are as big a tradition as the fall foliage,” said Nicole Christian, president & CEO of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce. “They have been occurring for more than six decades and we are pleased that we are able to officially incorporate them into the festival through our heritage area program.”

You are invited! Come together as a virtual community for the CTF Humanitarian Event to celebrate Mr. William G. Weissgerber’s philanthropic endeavors for Creating Opportunities for Our Youth. The event will be live-streamed on Thursday, September 10, 2020, at 7 p.m. and is free of charge.
Bill Weissgerber, of Garrett County, is a 1976 graduate of Southern High School, and an inductee into its Hall of Fame. While widely known for his accomplishments in realty in and around Deep Creek, youth has been a focus of Bill’s community involvement for several decades. It began with charity softball games and basketball games in the Pittsburgh area, where he was born and grew up before moving to Garrett County in 1973.
After volunteering as a youth football coach, he discovered he had a passion for coaching youth athletics. At his own expense, he attended the prestigious Wooten Basketball School and went on to serve as both the Head Coach for the Southern Lady Rams JV Team and Assistant Coach for the Varsity Lady Rams during some of their most successful years, including two state championships. While he expected much of his teams, he was keenly aware of each individual under his tutelage. He molded each young lady into not only a good player, but someone ready to meet life’s challenges with confidence and grace.
One of the most significant achievements of Billy’s life has been the transformative work of the WGW Community Youth Cup. The three-day event has turned the unfathomable tragedy of three families, that each lost a child to separate circumstances in 2012, into an annual event of hope and charity. The event includes a reception and two golf tournaments, as well as several community-based activities. Since its inception, the WGW event has raised over $800,000 for over 75 different youth-related activities.
“Bill has created a legacy of giving back that has inspired the community to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” adds CTF director Leah Shaffer. “He embodies the traits of a philanthropic leader who humbly seeks to make a difference for the greater good.”
Bill is married to Debbie Weissgerber, and they are parents of two daughters Karisa and Holly.
Out of concern for the health and well-being of all in our region, CTF has redesigned our traditional in-person celebration to a virtual format where everyone can attend safely. Let’s come together as a community and unite around our shared commitment to growing a stronger, more vibrant region.

The Clean and Green Team, one of several revitalization teams formed in 2016 to assist with revitalization projects for Oakland, is entering the Tucker Community Foundation Run For It event again this year. This is an annual event and cash awards are given out to non-profit organizations in Garrett, Preston and several other counties. Last year the team was awarded prize money which was applied to the purchase of flowers for the planters located throughout Oakland. This year the Clean & Green Team is entering with the purpose of using their cash award to help refresh the landscaping and maintain the Oakland Dog Park.
You can help by entering this virtual race and either joining or supporting the team. It is very easy. This is a virtual race and the entry fee is only $10.00. On Friday, September 11th, 2020, Wreaths Across America calls for every American to stand outside and wave a flag for one minute at 8:46AM and then again at 9:03 AM.
At 8:46 a.m., On Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, five hijackers took control of American Airlines Flight 11 and flew it into the heart of New York City and the northern facade of the World Trade Center’s North Tower (1 WTC).
At 9:03 a.m., five other hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the southern facade of the South Tower (2 WTC).
Following the events of 9/11, three patriotic women (Elaine Greene, Joann Miller and Carmen Foote) were moved to find an old American flag they had stored at home and stand on a hill in Freeport, Maine, waving that flag to honor victims. These women became nationally known as “The Freeport Flag Ladies,” and proudly hoisted the Stars and Stripes every Tuesday morning for the following 18 years.
After they retired on September 11, 2019, (their last 9/11 remembrance) the following Tuesday, September 17, 2019, Wreaths Across America took the helm and continued the weekly flag waving tradition along US Route 1 in Jonesboro, Maine, on land donated by the organization’s founder Morrill Worcester leading to the new Acadia National Cemetery.
Since that time Mr. Worcester has added a mile stretch of American flags (105 in total) on both sides of the road that lead to the entrance of Acadia National Cemetery which will open to the public for the first time on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020. Mr. Worcester also donated the land for this new National Cemetery to be built in his hometown.
“Each Tuesday, we are joined by dozens of members of the local community and curious people stopping to be part of something meaningful,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America, and wife of Morrill Worcester. “Especially over the last six months, this flag waving has taken on new meaning for us all and given a spark of hope and patriotism during this difficult time in our country.”
Participants are encouraged to take video and pictures of their participation in the national flag waving and share them with Wreaths Across America, their family and their friends to help REMEMBER, HONOR and TEACH the generation born after 9/11, how hard times can strengthen us as a nation. Please use the hashtag #FlagsAcrosstheCountry and #AmericaStrong when posting on social media and tag the Wreaths Across America Official Facebook page.
“My husband and the community’s commitment to the mission and continuation of this important weekly tradition has taken on the additional meaning of American unity during this uncertain time,” added Karen. “I hope Americans will see this as an opportunity to not only honor those directly affected by 9/11, but also to follow in the footsteps of “The Freeport Flag Ladies.”
Wreaths Across America is the non-profit organization best known for placing veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of our nation’s fallen at Arlington National Cemetery. However, the organization, in total, places more than 2 million sponsored wreaths at over 2200 participating locations nationwide and offers other programs throughout the calendar year. These programs remember the events of 9/11 in their own way such as The Mobile Education Exhibit which will be visiting Kentucky in September and will join in the national flag waving effort. Radio host Michael W. Hale of Wreaths Across America Radio will hold on-air tributes, and the on-line store will be selling #AmericaStrong signs made by the brother of “Lone Survivor” Marcus Lutrell (who gave a special family message during the Wreaths Across America Virtual Concert now streaming on Showcase NOW).

The Garrett County Health Department reminds parents of the required vaccines for school students.
- A single dose of Tdap and Meningococcal vaccine is required for all students entering 7th through 12th
- Two doses of Varicella vaccine are required for students entering Kindergarten through 5th
These requirements went into effect 2013 as per the Code of Maryland, COMAR 10.06.04.03.
They will hold two by-appointment immunization clinics for students in need of these vaccines for school entry. The first clinic is August 22nd from 8:30 am to 4 pm at the health department location at 1025 Memorial Drive, Oakland. The second clinic is August 23 from 8:30 am to 4 pm at the Grantsville location at 28 Hershberger Lane, Grantsville.
Tdap, Meningococcal, and Varicella vaccine will be offered free of charge and there will be no administration fee. Parents are asked to bring a current copy of the student’s immunization record. To schedule an appointment at one of the clinics, please call 301-334-7770 or 301-895-5355.
Also available at these clinics will be Gardasil®, the Human Papillomavirus or HPV vaccine, to age-eligible students. HPV vaccine is recommended for girls 9 to 26 years of age and boys 9 to 21 years of age to help prevent certain cancers caused by HPV infection including cervical, vulvar, vaginal, oral, penile, and anal cancers. Gardasil® will be offered at no charge for Vaccines for Children eligible students which includes those who have Medicaid, are un-insured, or whose insurance does not pay for the vaccine. There will be an administration fee for these students. Students with commercial insurance should bring a valid insurance card so their insurance can be billed for Gardasil®.

here. The current topic is the Water Appropriation Permit (WAP) which governs how much water can be withdrawn from Deep Creek Lake for a variety of purposes. The WAP is renewed every 12 years by the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) and a renewal will take place this year.
A delegation from Garrett County travelled to Washington, D.C. to meet with Congressional members and federal agency leaders on four priorities for Garrett County: (1) funding for the Oakland-Trout Run Combined Sewer Treatment Plant, (2) funding for Required Infrastructure Projects for Small Rural Municipalities (3) Better data of existing Broadband and funding for continued development, and (4) Market-rate Workforce Housing Development funding assistance.
